Hi Adam, the best advice that I can give when progressing through the discovery phase is to try the things that scare you. When you expand your comfort zone you will get a better idea of what truly makes you happy.

Wow...never quite looked at like this, though it makes a lot of sense. Right now I'm in the discovery phase but also am slowly but surely finding out that I love working for myself and communicating with others via the internet and am slowly carving out a niche for myself. At the same time, I'm trying to optimize my small business while still learning what it is I want to do in the grand scheme sense. Any tips for progressing through the discovery phase?

What a great way to sum it all up. I too am in my middle phase, but I have already started planning for my charity work. I'm enjoying this part of designing my life.

Hi Janelle, there is never a guarantee in any career. That's a good reminder for everyone.

Hi Marelisa, even when we think we've found the perfect career there are always wrenches in the plan. We just need to keep searching when our desires change.

Hi Sara, there is always hope to find a job we love.

Hi Tom, it's always best to follow your own rules.

Hi Vered, career planning has many levels and it's always good to take fresh perspectives.

What a wonderful, thorough article. I've never thought about career planning this way, but I agree with every single point you made here!

Hey Karl I get the gist of your post and I'd like to suggest a little twist on it. Your post is very thorough and comforting I'm sure to the younger generations. But at 58 in midlife, I found myself asking, why wait for career number three if it's the give back phase? Even if we've yet to reach all of our financial goals simply by working in a life of right livelihood, we are indeed giving back.

It's the example to others that one can find ones work bliss that I believe is the biggest gift. Finding your vocational groove allows you to play and do what you want. Some folks think retirement is an age. Others think that retirement is a sum of money. I think that retirement is when we make our transition. I'll agree with you here - no piddling around the garage for this dude! Thanks for the interesting perspective but I'm too much the rebel - I'll set my own stages.

I'm definitely in the discovery stage, and my network stinks. I'm really struggling. Maybe I should just go do something for fun, instead of always worrying about it not setting me up for a successful future. Maybe I'll get both. Who knows.
