Stress Relief Techniques for Your Commute

I recently read a bumper sticker on the back of a rusted old pick-up truck. It said:

“I’ve got nowhere special to be, so why don’t you get off my butt!”

I was actually riding his bumper because I was rushing to get to work. I had already hit three red lights and now I was staring at that rusty old truck. Since I couldn’t pass him I eased off my gas and thought about that bumper sticker. The more I read it, the more it made sense. That man understood that whenever he got to his destination, regardless of the time, it was going to be just fine.

6 Exercise Hacks While You Are At Work

Your blood needs to flow freely and at times quickly. Fast moving blood will help clean out the plaque that’s been building up inside your arteries. Sometimes our jobs just don’t provide that excitement that gets the blood flowing. So we need to create it for ourselves.

I don’t want you to strip down to your underwear and streak through the office. Well I think that would be cool, but not very good for your career.

Exercise is a vital component to feeling good while we are working throughout the day. People who exercise at least 20 minutes a day see a significant increase in energy compared to people who don’t exercise at all.

The Greatest Compliment of My Life and Compliments to Give Your Co-workers

My wife and I were discussing the need for people to compliment each other at work. Not enough of us do it. With Thanksgiving coming along in a few days, I’m reminded of the importance of showing gratitude to our co-workers with a simple and honest compliment.

My favorite compliment of all time came from my senior year high school English teacher. My friend and I were leaving school after our last final when we took a quick peek into our English class to say goodbye. She looked up and smiled. We told her thanks for everything.

She looked at both of us then said to me,

No More Complaining at Work – A Thirty Day Challenge

Over the past few months I’ve noticed my complaining getting a little louder (in my own head and with friends). It might pop out when I’m asked to work on an extra report or maybe during a conversation with a friend. The complaining has become a nuisance and I’m going to challenge myself to thirty days of no complaining.

I’m an East Coaster living in Austin and the driving styles are much different. East Coasters will push their way into a lane. Texans will wait patiently to be let in. I know I’m generalizing, but bear with me. East coasters like to get through pink lights. Don’t get me started on New Yorkers who will go through a red light until the other cars from the other direction push forward and make them stop. Whoops, there is my first complaint.

Digging a Little Deeper to Develop Your Emotional Intelligence

Over the summer I was listening to a book on CD about Frank Sinatra during my daily commute. He used to stand outside nightclubs begging the owners for a chance to sing for free, pushing his talents on to anyone willing to listen to his story. This was a recurrent theme throughout his early career. He would get a break then blow it because he let his temper get the best of him. He was forced to recreate himself until he discovered his emotional stability. Yes, he always had a temper, but he used that anger to spur his actions. His actions as one of the greatest singers of his era and his fearlessness when fighting for racial equality speak volumes of his ability to harness his emotions.

J.D. over at Get Rich Slowly forced me to take a hard look at my own writing. Read the rest of this entry »

So Your Boss Spits When He Yells

The spit comes flying out

of his mouth,

splashing on to his desk.

He doesn’t even have the decency to stand up.

His fat tired legs are tired of making an effort.

Funny thing is he doesn’t have a problem yelling at you until his veins turn red to purple.

He’s pissed because of

a mistake you made.

Encouragement isn’t in his vocabulary.
