Day 1of 30 – No complaining

My first day of no complaining went well. My mood was especially chipper. I wasn’t surprised by this because I could tell that I was on a mission. I wasn’t going to succumb to the temptation of whining/complaining.

I only noticed myself complain when I was interrupted in the middle of an email. My boss wanted me to work on a different project and a little complaint came out. I whined that I wasn’t able to finish my thought. I didn’t let my boss hear my complaint, it was just under my breath, but alas it was still there.

Internal Complaining

I could feel my internal whine begin to come out on my way home. Traffic wasn’t too bad, but it’s a weak spot for me. I think this was due to my low blood sugar levels. I usually stop snacking around 3pm, so as not to fill myself up before dinner. I’m going to keep an eye on this because I might be able to reduce my complaining by keeping my blood sugar at a tolerable level or actually learning to deal with less food and not let my body dictate my happiness. This will be fun.

Before I allowed the usual commuting to rage come out, I decided to nip it in the bud with a book on tape. By occupying my mind I was able to relax pretty much my whole way home. I’ve tried this before, but my ADD usually kicks in and I forget to stay focused. I made up my mind to listen to the book and I stayed with it.

My wife was at night school so I was stuck walking the dog and cooking a meal. We usually trade off, so a little sigh came out. I considered it a complaint. I’m trying to be tough on myself in the beginning so I’ll improve as the 30 days progress.

By Product of the No Complaining 30 day trial

My face was very relaxed today. Most days I have some tension in my forehead, lower back and jaw. This tension was non existent. I’m not sure if it was a lucky day or not, but I’m going to keep an eye on this too.

Because I’m not allowed to complain I’m noticing that my thoughts are trying to find something positive in the situation. I think all my personal development work over these past ten years has really helped me to reach this level.  Not too bad (a little pat on the back. My mini celebration – Yes!)

I can feel that it’s easier to access positive thoughts because I’ve been planting positive seeds that are really flourishing.

I’ve decided I’m not going to write about No Complaining every day. I think my next post on the no complaining trial will be this time next week, unless some brilliant breakthrough occurs.

  1. I’m amazed at how hard this really is Karl. I did it through my Church as a challenge a few months ago and we had wrist bands that we’d have to move from wrist to wrist when we did complain as a reminder NOT to.

    I latched onto a short phrase to help in these type of situations where you want to complain. Instead, just say, “It could be worse”… Nice update and good luck !

  3. Internal complaining – you’ve hit a sore spot for me. See, I think I don’t complain too much – but that’s the external complaining. Internal complaining – there I could use some work! In fact, your point about being interrupted at work is exactly what I face, and internally complain about. So, while I thought at first I wasn’t too bad at complaining, when I really look at it – there is much I can improve upon. I’m going to really try at this too (does this sounds wishy-washy, like Alex said??) – I will work at this! Good points today Karl, and ones that are making me re-think where I’m at on this continuum.

    Hi Alex, give it a try and watch what happens. I’m only starting day 3 and it’s really helped me.

    Hi Lance, it’s funny to listen to the complaining that goes on in my head. From little things like the cold tile floor to being stuck at a red light. In the beginning it’s just about watching and learning. The more I become aware of my complaining the easier it will be to adjust my thoughts.

    Hi Glen, no complaining is one thing, but 7 days of positivity is another level. Let me know how it goes.

  7. Ha! This is awesome, Karl. Lately, since I returned from the holidays, I’ve promised myself to try being more optimistic…I think that kinda’ goes hand in hand with not complaining as much :)

  8. Thank you Karl for this update post. I missed the intro to this, but I really like this idea. I know I can use improvement as well. I have come a LOONG way, and don’t complain much, but I know I can improve, especially when you talk about the internal complaining. I used to be a chronic complainer and I could NOT stop even with maximum effort. I wanted to so bad, but just could not. After moving and then changing my perspective about things I made huge strides. Then when I learned to process emotional pain it improved even more. I think if I implemented this 30 day challenge then I could knock it completely out.

    I have tried to focus more on gratitude lately, and that seems to be the kicker for me. When I focus on my blessings there’s simply no room for complaining.

  9. Hi Karl: I’ve read that thoughts literally create grooves in our brain. So the more you can get yourself to think positive thoughts instead of complaining, the easier it will get to continue doing this in the future.

  11. Ok, count me in for No Complaints for 30 Days. Ooohh…it’s gonna be tough during the holiday season (but I’m NOT complaining about it, I’m just saying). Karl, I’m with you on the traffic/commuting frustrations. I ride the train, which provides ample opportunities for complaints. For distraction, I try to think about stuff like funny conversations, jokes. Then when I giggle out loud, I wonder if people around me complain that there are weirdos on the train.

  13. Wow. Food for thought big time! How many do any of us complain in one day. I know I have a tendency to look at the negative side sometimes, and I know where it comes from – a family that loves to complain A LOT! It becomes a pastime and a habit for so many people. Hmmm… I wonder why? Thanks for bringing this out! I’m looking inwards now…too… Good luck.

  14. Hi Karl, great scheme about not complaining. I hit a real post Xmaslow yesterday, then picked myself up and feel quite different today. When I start walking the negative trail, I bring myself up short with the command: ‘Find four things to love, right now!’ And there are always four things to be grateful for. Hope it works for you. Also, I find if I can push through the inertia with one productive action, one email, start a blog post, whatever, that I feel much better.
