i enjoyed your views on how to be happy at work. i worked for a previous employer for 10 years and i must say it probably shortedned my life span by 5 or 10 years. i was very unhappy there.my boss only cared about the bottom line and not his employees. i saw 8 employees come and go in those short 10 years.i thought if i stuck it out and did the best i could that my boss would eventually notice. guess what,he did not.instead he knew he could count on me to work weekends and run his buisness for him while he enjoyed time off with his family. it was'nt until i gave him notice that he offered me more money of course he never gave me a number. i was not happy their anyway but i was the best employee he ever had and i know he misses me dearly. i now work for a much larger company that does notice loyalty, hard work and dedication and it makes me feel great. i've only been with the company 4 years but have recieved 5 promotions since i've been here. my advice to you is keep up the great work you're doing and help employers wake up to their employee's needs.and my advice to people who are not happy at their job is find another job where you will be appreciated and one that will be conducive of your hard work, loyalty and dedication. life is much too short for good hard workers if you're happy at your job your happy at home that is a fact.

I really like your article. It is the rippling effect of the manager making his staff feel positive that makes them a team.

These are such great tips Karl! In fact they apply to more than just work, as I know you know. :) I think it's a great list for me to keep in mind as I'm moving forward and thinking about hiring people to help in my business. :)

Hi Marelisa, I would have loved to seen Herb Kelleher dress up as a chicken.

Hi Stephen, when people care about the people they work for and with that's when it's easy to work happy.

Karl, wonderful and content rich article. Great job.

5. Help Them Find Meaning in Their Work

I think that one is key. My observation is that the lack of meaning, caring, and passion is an epidemic in corporate culture today. It really makes all the difference in the world.

Hi Karl: These are great pointers. I particularly like these two: help your employees find meaning in their work (people are happier when they feel that they are working toward something that they consider to be important) and encouraging friendships in the workplace. I read the owner of Southwest Airlines dressed up in a chicken suit once and passed out peanuts. :-)

Hi J.D, you make a great point. The values do flow down. We need to change the culture of letting negative values take over a work place. This isn't something we can do in a few years. We need to become more aware of companies' values and how they affect the rest of the organization.

Hi Target Turned Tigress, thanks for checking back in. It's nice to see that people are curious about what others wrote.

Hi Barbara, sounds like your husband has a lot of word of mouth business. The best kind of marketing there is. I have a good feeling he loves what he does.

Hi Goodness, thanks for the link love. :)

Hi Leandra, it's amazing how fast a company can take the positive energy of a new employee and just stomp all over it.

@J.D. Meier, so, so correct. I worked at a place where the management didn't care so much, so neither did anyone else. I came in as a eager, new employee and two weeks later had a similar attitude as everyone else, that so evidently came from the top.

It's amazing that managers by and large haven't realized that employee happiness increases productivity.
