How Your Company Can Bring the Fun Back

lego-jailWe’re afraid of having fun because we might get caught by our boss. The dreaded Fired hangs over us like a dark cloud. So we quietly go about our work trying to stay under the radar.

The problem with this method of working is that our confidence takes a hit. We don’t always make choices that best fit the situation, because if the choice scares us then we avoid it. Living this way puts us in a state of lack instead of abundance.

Most of us were raised to stay under the radar. We got negative attention for being bad. When we did something good there was no fanfare because it’s what we were supposed to be doing.

Much of the corporate world works this way too. The people who get promoted are the ones who do the least damage to the company. That’s no way to reward an employee who has the courage to try something new and they fail.

We need to build a culture that accepts mistakes especially if an employee puts their neck on the line. When people are encouraged to take risks, they will be more likely to accomplish projects that will succeed big.

The Hard, The Fun, and The Beautiful – Double Whammy Edition

(Can’t see the video? Then try watching it at Work Happy Now – The Hard, The Fun and The Beautiful – Double Whammy Edition)

Where we are free to talk about the hard, the fun, and the beautiful of our work week.

My brain has been cloudy this past week. I’m right in the middle of a good blog post and this fog comes over me. I never really get writers block, but I do get “the fog.” I can still trudge through and get it down, but it’s hard. When this happens I do wish it away and I shouldn’t because it’s a part of the process.

Navigating the fog can be fun if I just slow down and I don’t try to bully my way through the post.

I know you’ve been there. No matter what work you do, sometimes there is the mental fog that just slows everything down. When you are trying to meet a deadline it can really be a pain in the butt.

5 STEPS to Success

sid-hurlbertSid Hurlbert is a renowned public speaker, who teaches the art of “What to say & How to say it” using his STEPS method. When I first heard of Sid I had no idea who he was, but after reading his website, talking to him in person, and attending his two hour seminar, I’m confident that this man is on board with the Work Happy Now cause.

One of his seminars is called “Fun at work…WORKS!” He has been teaching what we’ve been talking about. I have to admit he’s done it for a lot longer than I have.

Sid uses a method called STEPS. It’s simple and easy to use – just the way business communication should be taught.

S – Smile

T – Tone of Voice

E – Expression/Facial

P – Posture

S – Start putting into people what you want back

1. Smile

I know how much more I enjoy working with someone who smiles and laughs easily. If a co-worker is a big grump then it can wreck a whole day.

Unconventional Guide to Self Acceptance

self-acceptanceThis post was inspired by Chris Guillebeau’s Unconventional Writing Contest.

What holds you back from accomplishing your dreams?

If you could pin down the one thing that is keeping you from reaching your most glorious dreams where you travel like Chris Guillebeau, make money like Oprah, or work a crowd like Bill Clinton…

What would it be?

Your education?

Your relationships?

Your…

It’s none of those things.

It’s your fear.

The fear within you is holding you back from making your dream life a reality. Now I’m not claiming to know it all; I myself have been guilty of giving in to my fears many times, but the important thing is that I recognize what’s holding me back.

Believe me, even Oprah and Bill Clinton have fears, but the difference between them and us is that they lean into their fears until they aren’t afraid of the fire any longer.
