How to Build Better Relationships at Work

Relationships are built on trust. If I trust you to help me finish a project and you flake out on me, that trust is gone.

If you are a stand up person who sweats, bleeds, and cries by my side and also encourages me to be great than you’ve earned my trust. I’ll love you until the end of time.

This video was shot on my lunch hour because that morning I worked on a project with a group of guys I would go to business war with. They are smart, fun, and we get a lot accomplished. Yes, I’m talking about my day job. Hey, I’m doing this for you, so I can learn first hand how to make people happy at work. :)

We need to learn to build trust with our co-workers, bosses, and clients. That means being there and supporting them when they need it the most.

  1. Happiness at work is “About relationships” as you say.

    Yes, for a over twenty years I worked with a group of folks in a seminary setting that provided an excellent work atmosphere.

    Why?

    Some quick thoughts as I write this post to answer my own question. It was an excellent environment because…

    1. Of a shared purpose.

    2. Mutual support: everyone was for everyone else and it was understood by all.

    3. The leader of the pack established his relationships with those under him based on trust and, in fact, the aspect of trust was shared by all as well.

    4. Humor was common yet balanced: people may stop, chat and get back to doing what they were there to do.

    5. Freedom of expression within your job responsibilities: i.e. not mico-management but enough to allow you to try to excel.

    Those are some quick reasons for the positive environment.

    • Hi Lee, A shared purpose is crucial to building trust and willingness to work with each other. If everyone believes that they are making a difference, they are more willing to compromise to make the goal happen.

      Humor is another great must to have an excellent environment. When we laugh with each other we create stronger bonds that encourage supporting each other through tough times.

  2. I think a lot of people stretch themselves too think working on too many projects at once. This can yield multiple projects completed with mediocre results.

    Focusing on taking on less responsibility and producing good results might result in more associates that would swear by you and want you in the trenches with them when performance really counts.

    Great tip! In a way, this is telling people not to be so self-absorbed and that is really a key thing, don’t ya think? I worked with a woman once who was the epitome of self-absorbed and she was miserable and made everyone else miserable too!

  4. The video is great! I think this tip goes with every relationship in the world not just at work. So often our ego tells us to keep things to ourselves and the reality is we need to do just the opposite.

    Trust is an amazing thing, and it feels so good when we have it. You pointed out an amazing tip for work happiness when we can indeed develop these nice bonds with our co-workers.

  9. My doctoral thesis ‘Ethical Implications in Social Work’ highlights three qualities: virtue, respect and justice. A healthy relationship needs all these three, be it in a work place or in a family environment.

    I completely concur with your statement in the video. In order to recieve you must first give. This is true in all parts and stages of life not just work/business.

    I usualy worked by myself, cause I could not give up control to others, thinking they would do a lousier job than me. Once I learned to let go and partner up, I got an emidiate relief as well as more work done. With it ofcourse came more money and MORE free time.
