Tell Stories

The success of your business depends on how well you can convey your best stories to your potential customers. I was recently on a call with a lady who wanted to throw a Twitter party around her three books. I was giving her all the facts, but none of the glory of a great party.

Gotta sell the sizzle too!

Every Town is Slightly Different

No matter where you go every town has different rules. A beach town doesn’t care if you come in the store in your bare feet. They just want your business. If you don’t take time to notice these little details you are missing out on how people connect with each other in the town.

The beach stores don’t want to enforce rules on people that doesn’t make sense. People walk around in bare feet. If you want them to come into your store you can’t force them to wear something they don’t have on them.

You have to be flexible with the community you are creating. They might not want to comment on your blog. They might not want to buy certain types of products. Yes you are creating the community, but you still have to be flexible.

You might be the sheriff, keeping order, but you aren’t the only one creating rules. It’s your job to listen to your people and see what they really want from you. You build a community by knowing how to make people feel comfortable and happy.

Be the Rabbit with Focus

tortoise-hareAlmost everyone loves the story of the tortoise and the hare. It’s a classic.

I hate it!

It’s too limiting.

If everyone thinks of themselves at the tortoise, nothing would get done. Yes, I understand the story’s concept. If you stick with something you’ll win the marathon in the end.

The rabbit has the superpower of speed and that’s great, but like any great strength he lacks passion and focus. This is where I actually love the book.

Yes, I admit. I love the book too!

Open Up

You are hiding from your fear of the unknown. You don’t want to face the challenge that a new conversation can bring.

You talk to the same people. Eat the same food at your favorite restaurant.

Look for Their Hidden Superpowers

It’s not who you meet it’s how much people care about you and your idea. I could meet Bill Gates tomorrow and tell him about my amazing Twitter Parties, but he probably wouldn’t care. He doesn’t need an online party to be successful. He would probably be polite, take my business card and we’d never speak again.

I’m telling you this because like the rest of us, you probably get caught up in meeting big time people in your industry. You want the big players to notice you. This is good if your company is ready, but if it’s not, it’s a waste of your time.

The Difference

Every time you visit a store there are rarely neutral emotions after your experience is over. I recently went into Randalls grocery store to buy some bread. As I walked in I saw this soda box display.

It made me whisper to myself, “That’s cool.” Whenever I utter the words cool I try to remember to take a picture. This time I remembered.

These soda boxes create a different feeling when you walk in to the grocery store. It made me smile and glad I chose to shop there today.

Each time someone visits your website, store, or you they come away with an impression that builds trust or chops it down. What are you doing to create something that makes people glad they stopped by?

Pound It Hard

Do you know what a builder would say if you asked, “How do you hammer in the nail?” If he didn’t laugh in your face he would tell you to swing the hammer on top of the nail until it goes in the wood. Simple and no need for a detailed tutorial.

Learning how to leverage social media’s ability to send traffic to your website is all about striking the nail so many times that you hit the mark more often than not. You know how social media works. Popular stuff gets reposted and the weak stuff is forgotten.

You have to be willing to be in everyone’s face for many years. Because if you aren’t annoying people just a little you aren’t doing it right.

Check out this awesome interview from Lewis Howes with Grant Cardone. Grant tells his secret to getting attention online.

  1. Seek attention
  2. Receive criticism
  3. Feel the hate
  4. It all builds into admiration

If you are not willing to put yourself out on a limb and say something different people aren’t going to care. People want fresh ideas that will help them in their business and life.

How can you put yourself out there so people take notice of your ideas?

Audio Interview With Peter Buffett

buffett07_story1-whnWhenever I’m asked to interview someone I only do it if I have a burning desire to ask that person a certain question. Peter Buffett fell into this category, so when his publicist contacted me about a possible interview I jumped on it.

I wanted to ask Peter if people were jealous that his family was rich. Being the son of Warren Buffett one of the most famous people on the planet can draw a lot of attention, positive and negative, so I was curious about his experiences.

I was amazed by Peter’s grounded nature and willingness to think before he speaks. I should have known he would be a great interview.

I recorded the interview for all of you to listen to:
