  2. Focus.
  3. Strengths.

When all 3 things are combined into one skill that’s a superpower. That’s when people feel empowered. When they are excited to do their work.

I noticed a huge difference in my happiness when I did work that aligned with my superpowers. When I looked for ways to grow my skills as well as help the company grow, my happiness increased.

I also began to make small changes to improve my outlook. I knew that I had a lot of opportunities that I wasn’t taking advantage of because I was scared of failure. I decided to put myself on a no complaining diet for 30 days back in 2008. Instead of finding all the ways I hated a task. I started looking for the positives in the situation.

Take Back Control

I started taking back control of my own career. I knew I was on to something powerful.

I wanted to write a book that could take someone from unhappy at work to happy in less than 30 days. I did. I wrote a book based on my experiences on this blog. It’s a thought provoking, take action, workbook with a ton of tips type of book. I very cleverly titled it Work Happy Now.

My belief is that everyone should be happy at work and every company should help them become happier.

Companies that aren’t helping people become happier at work are missing out on a huge opportunity. Happy employees are more engaged, productive and stay longer at a company.

People who are happy at work are changing the world. They feel connected to a larger mission.

You can’t do it alone. If you work in a toxic environment then you need to get out.

If you work for a supportive company then it’s up to you to figure out why you aren’t happy and what you can do to change these feelings.

You need to be doing work that you care about. You need to be unleashing your superpowers at work. You need to be doing work that improves people’s lives.

Adjusting Your Mindset

Many times, it’s a simple mindset adjustment that can get you back on track. Other times it’s doing work that is more in line with your superpowers.

It all starts from your core. You can’t expect to be happy at work if you aren’t happy with yourself first. Work really is the best place to start working on improving your happiness.

An annoying co-worker is one of the best lessons in happiness that your life can provide. I learned so much about myself from annoying co-workers.

I had one co-worker who would blast his music, with headphones on, so it could be heard all over the office. I’m talking really annoying music that made me want to throw a stapler at him.

I would always get so mad and stew in my own angry thoughts. I only made the situation worse. When I began to see why I was so angry, I began to let go of the hate. I was then able to take action. Whenever he blared his music, I would go up and talk to him. He didn’t like that. It became a game. He blared the music and I would interrupt him with some boring conversation about music.

He didn’t want to talk to me, so he slowly began turning it down. I literally trained him to lower his music. I was the annoying co-worker whisperer. My co-workers loved me.

Believe me, it’s easy to be happy on vacation. You go where you want and do what you want. There isn’t much challenge in being happy on vacation. The true happiness test comes when you are faced with adversity and find ways to stay calm, centered and appreciative.

There are small steps that we can do to feel happier after a day’s work. This is where I always suggest my clients start. These are the tricks that can help us bring the appreciation for what we have back into our lives.

I’ve suggested to countless clients to keep a gratitude journal. At the end of each day write down 3 things that made you feel like you were making a difference in someone’s lives. This simple 2 minute habit can change your mindset.

Once you begin to improve your mindset, you can then turn to growing your career.

The key to this book is that  it helps build a foundation: from setting resolutions to live by while you are at work, to uncovering your superpowers, to building great relationships, to getting the results that wow co-workers and customers, to doing work you are passionate about.

You have the ability to be happy in almost any work situation. You can’t ever give up.
