7 Ways to Have a Good Relationship With Your Boss

my-boss-whnEditor’s note: This is a guest post from Lisa of Getting to Zen. I want to add that this post can also be used for small business owners who need to improve their relationships with their clients. A happy client is just like a happy boss.

I always knew that having a good relationship with my managers was important, however, I didn’t realize how important it was until four years into my career. Looking back on my working life, I could have had many more opportunities for advancement had I worked on building strong relationships with those I reported to.

Who is Dibs?

dibs-self-whnKarl’s note: This post was inspired by the book, “Dibs in Search of Self,” by Virginia Axline.

First, let me say it doesn’t matter who Dibs is. It doesn’t matter because as you read the book you connect with the character of Dibs. You saw yourself through his story.

What does matter is what you do with this knowledge.

Before I lose you…I know this is a career development site. Let me explain who Dibs is. Dibs is a young boy who went into therapy because his parents thought that he was mentally defective. (Spoiler alert!). He was actually a genius. The book was created to help play therapy counselors understand how play therapy can build a kid’s confidence and awareness.

How to Feel Good about Your Job

smiling-at-work-2Editor’s Note: Lisa H. (aka RunningBear) is the founder of Getting to Zen

I can’t count the number of times that I have heard someone say “I hate my job”– Day after day, begrudgingly going to work repeating this mantra. But, if this thing called a “job” was taken away from them they wouldn’t have the means to pay for the things that they needed on a day-to-day basis (food, shelter, clothing). So isn’t it ironic that something like a “job” would be hated by so many people when it can bring them so many benefits.

3 Must Know Rules to Earn Respect

respectHave you ever been in a situation where you deserved more respect, but you couldn’t command it?

Feeling respected is a huge part of happiness. When we feel respected we are more confident.

This confidence carries into our interactions. When we are confident we want to improve friendships. We want to hang out. We want to jump into new projects that will challenge us.

Of course we all feel weak in certain situations. We can’t help but feel this way because we can’t be amazing in every situation. Sometimes we have to be humble and accept our situation at the moment. This can be good for you when you are a student learning from a teacher, but when you are expected to command respect you don’t have this option.

You have to know the hidden rules of communication that many people don’t realize exist.

What You and a Hermit Crab have in Common

hermit-crabWe can’t live freely. No one can. We need self constructed rules, so our brains don’t explode.

We all need rules in order to feel comfortable. Even your favorite A-list movie star lives within rules that a regular person can’t even fathom.

You tell yourself that you can’t ask your boss for a raise.

You tell yourself that you can’t find a better job that matches your superpowers.

You tell yourself that you don’t need to love what you do.

You function well within this mental cage. You don’t want to be able to live a fully unrestricted life because it would be too free.

The problem is that your self-created cage is too small. You don’t see the little door behind the couch. The door that opens up to the perfect playground. Those cool monkey bars that challenge your muscles. Those cool puzzles that challenge your mind.

How to Find Career Fulfillment

smiling-at-deskEditor’s note: This is a guest post from Joe Wilner of Shake off the Grind.

We all want that “job” where we jump out of bed for in the morning, and feel excited and energized about the day ahead of us. Though, the majority of people are not happy in their job. They have reached an impasse, feel stuck, and are no longer gaining growth from their career experience.

Reaching an impasse can be a very beneficial moment in someone’s life though. It’s an important part of personal and professional growth. It signals that it’s time to start looking deeper at how we want to spend our time, and what type of professional endeavor and lifestyle will provide satisfaction and fulfillment.

Many people feel that finding career fulfillment is a lofty and idealistic dream. It’s easy to have doubts once we’re habitually conditioned to a certain lifestyle and daily routine, but I truly believe that people can find work that’s inspiring, purposeful, and ultimately fulfilling.

As long as you love the process and experience of what you’re doing, true career fulfillment can be obtained. If you have positive well-being and your values are met, then you’re on the right path.

So, what will provide you career fulfillment? Below are a few guidelines to consider.

Reposition Your New Career

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Art Decker of New York self storage

“When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” This occurred to me during a recent move, but I was skeptical. I was moving from Chicago, where all my friends and family lived, where all my work contacts were located, to San Francisco. San Francisco is a beautiful city, but I did not know anyone and my cost of living was about to skyrocket.

All my thoughts were consumed with discouraging statistics: Groceries in San Francisco are 14 percent more than in Chicago, health care was going to cost me 8 percent more, and my housing was slated to increase roughly 108 percent. Not only was I going to have to adjust to a new city and find new friends, but I was confronting the reality of a significant downsize. I was not thrilled and even the lemonade in San Francisco seemed expensive!

Though I wasn’t in the mood for making lemonade out of my lemons, it seemed more refreshing than sipping lemon juice at a pity party.  Here’s what I did to embrace my new adventure.
