Coworker Trust – Sometimes It’s Better to Give AND Receive
Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Eileen Habelow, Ph.D. of Randstad
You work with them about 8 hours a day, 250 days out of the year. Depending on your line of work, you may see them more than you see friends and family. Your co-workers are an integral part of your ability to do your job, to develop and succeed in your career and even to ensure your day-to-day happiness. In this year’s Randstad Work Watch survey on coworker relationships, 70 percent of respondents said that workplace friendships create a more supportive and friendly workplace. That’s why building healthy, trusting relationships with these people is so important.

Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Eileen Habelow, Ph.D. of Randstad
December is one of those contradictory months during which we use the most vacation time but feel the most stressed. Why is this? Add up the limited time in the office, the fact that everyone on vacation isn’t responding to email or voicemail and the personal workload of holiday shopping and cooking, and you have your answer.
But the question isn’t why we’re stressed but what we can do about it. While you’re still at the office this holiday season, here are a few tips to keep the stress level down and the cheer up.

The Skillful Art of Salary Negotiation
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Lisa H. (aka RunningBear) is the founder of Getting to Zen. I liked this article because negotiating can actually be fun if you have the right tools and attitude.
About 3 and half years ago I was in the awkward position of having to negotiate my salary for the position I currently hold. I say awkward because salary negotiation is often the most sensitive issue in the whole hiring process. As I have gotten older, I have become more comfortable discussing what my skills are worth, but I am not yet where I want to be.

Is Work Stress Hurting Your Family Life?
Has your boss ever put an extra task on your plate because they had to disperse the work due to a round of layoffs?
You shake your head because you wonder why (put co-workers name here), who loves his hourly coffee breaks, didn’t get the extra work. You can’t complain now because you don’t want to be a part of the next round of layoffs.
Stress plays a huge role in whether or not you are happy at work. When you are unhappy you often take these feelings home with you.

What Elephants Have in Common with Gratitude
Did you know that elephants travel the same long journey every year?
They do. They do it because they know when the fruit will falls from the trees, so they can eat them when they are perfectly fermented and able to get a little tipsy. I forget the name of the kind of African elephant that does this, but believe me it’s true.
They only do this once a year because they have the discipline to appreciate the moment then move on.

How to Feel Good about Your Job
Editor’s Note: Lisa H. (aka RunningBear) is the founder of Getting to Zen
I can’t count the number of times that I have heard someone say “I hate my job”– Day after day, begrudgingly going to work repeating this mantra. But, if this thing called a “job” was taken away from them they wouldn’t have the means to pay for the things that they needed on a day-to-day basis (food, shelter, clothing). So isn’t it ironic that something like a “job” would be hated by so many people when it can bring them so many benefits.

How Cancer has Changed My Life
I was told by my urologist that there is a 98% chance that I have cancer. Even writing that sentence makes me feel sick to my stomach. The shock shakes me from my inside out.
I don’t know whether to go and cry or to be strong. I want to do both and I have tried both.
The hardest part of it all is not knowing how to handle my life. I feel like I’m in limbo.

3 Must Know Rules to Earn Respect
Have you ever been in a situation where you deserved more respect, but you couldn’t command it?
Feeling respected is a huge part of happiness. When we feel respected we are more confident.
This confidence carries into our interactions. When we are confident we want to improve friendships. We want to hang out. We want to jump into new projects that will challenge us.
Of course we all feel weak in certain situations. We can’t help but feel this way because we can’t be amazing in every situation. Sometimes we have to be humble and accept our situation at the moment. This can be good for you when you are a student learning from a teacher, but when you are expected to command respect you don’t have this option.
You have to know the hidden rules of communication that many people don’t realize exist.
