My brain was fried. I could barely see straight. I could actually feel my neck muscles getting tighter.

I stopped what I was doing and wrote down 5 things I was grateful for.

My comfortable pants.

My wife – who was probably starting to cook me dinner.

My bunghole of a dog – who has forced me to be more relaxed with my frustration.

My thumb – because it looked really cool at that moment.

My brother – who always knows what to say to make me feel good about myself.

It worked. I calmed down, walked around to stretch my legs, then came back to my desk and finished the part of the project that I needed to email to my co-worker.

I’ve been doing this for a while now, but I think this technique could really help others as well. If you keep a “Good Things” notebook, make sure you just write down a few quick things and the reasons why you enjoy them. There’s no need to go into a whole story. If you want this little habit to become a part of your routine, you need to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Deborah Norville, the New York Times bestselling author of Thank You Power: Making the Science of Gratitude Work for You, was interviewed by Gretchen Rubin of the Happiness Project. In the interview she made a great case for this practice.

“I keep a little booklet, the size of a check book, in my purse and I ‘ll jot things down randomly during the day…often when I’m stuck in traffic going cross town. It works for a couple of reasons: One, it distracts me from whatever it is that is delaying me. Two, it forces me to go back through my day and find the ‘bright spots’ – of which there are many.”

So next time you are feeling sad, overwhelmed or angry then try keeping a “Good Things” notebook at your desk, when you need a perspective change.

You can’t prepare for random questions; you just have to say the first thing that pops in your head. Most of the time. We can’t say everything. Stacey of Let It Flow asked me some very interesting questions, so check out the half hour interview and listen to what we talked about.

Podcast Wednesday: Interview with Karl Staib of Work Happy Now

My favorite technique of Stacey’s was her ability to ask follow up questions that dug deeper into the subject of work happiness. There are millions of staged interviews, but they are always boring. Always! The best ones are when the conversation flows naturally.

I think Stacey and I found a nice rhythm and you’ll be glad you took a half hour out of your day to listen.

Talking points:

Gratitude is vital to staying happy at work

Celebration should be done more often

Taking breaks helps relieve stress and improve our productivity

Don’t forget to leave a comment because all bloggers love feedback.

*

Sometimes I need some motivation to think differently and Hunter Nuttall helps me find a new angle.

*

My work happiness project is forming into shape, so stay tuned because I’ll be helping you create your own work happiness project, building on all the great tools you already have.

He was on the cover of Inc. Magazine. He speaks at large conferences and spreads the Zappos culture message. I felt lucky to hear him speak at SxSW conference this past year.

I’ve touted Tony’s leadership on Work Happy Now. I’ve also been spurred to write a few articles because of his blog. But now I landed an interview with him. Tony’s employee called him a genius. You know when an employee calls his boss a genius, this person must be something special. After all, your employees are the ones who see you for 40 to 50 hours a week and begin to see the cracks.

Tony has made me view work happiness from new angles. I’m glad he is out there in the business world. He helped create Zappos, a company that emphasizes the importance of enjoying work. His concepts are leading the employee revolution, encouraging change in the business world.

Karl: How important is work happiness to you?

Tony: I think it’s very important, not just to me personally, but I think it’s also really important for employees to be happy. It’s pretty much impossible for an unhappy employee to deliver great customer service or to be an effective brand ambassador.

Karl: What is one activity that makes you happy at work?

Tony: One of the most rewarding activities for me has been communicating to employees, vendors, and customers about what we are all about at Zappos. I do this primarily through email and public speaking, and it’s always great to watch people’s reactions as they learn about our core values, company culture, and focus on customer service.

You can learn more about our culture on our blogs:

http://blogs.zappos.com

As well as here:

http://about.zappos.com

Karl: How do you maintain balance between your working and non-working life?

Tony: When you’re passionate about what you’re doing, there doesn’t need to be a clear separation between work and non-work. I think most people assume that work is something that has to be unenjoyable. Part of our goal at Zappos is for employees to look forward to coming into the office, and our company culture is a big reason why they do.

Karl: Do you work on being happy at work?

Tony: Yes, we are always looking for ways to improve our company culture. In most companies, as the company grows bigger, the company culture goes downhill. Our goal is to have the culture actually get stronger as the company grows.

Karl: How does your work happiness differ between now and when you first started working full-time?

Tony: Prior to Zappos, I never really paid much attention to company culture. In fact, at LinkExchange, which I co-founded, by the time we got to 100 people, the company culture had gone really downhill, which is why we ended up selling the company. At Zappos, I wanted to make sure I didn’t make the same mistake again.

Karl: If you are feeling down, what do you do to lift your spirits?

Tony: I’ve found that usually a change of environment can help a lot.

Karl: What is your biggest detriment to work happiness?

Tony: I think for everyone, a big detriment to work happiness can be feeling like you are not in control of your own destiny. But what I’ve realized is that in the end, things usually end up working themselves out.

Karl: If you could give work happiness advice to someone just starting their career in 140 characters or less (Twitter style) what would it be?

Tony: What are you so passionate about that you would be willing to do it for 10 years without ever making a dime? That’s what you should do.

Not because the companies I worked for always gave me every perk, all the money I needed or non-stop appreciation. I had to do most of those things for myself. I learned that looking for and finding meaning/purpose in my work kept my motivation much higher.

Now I believe that if my past jobs would have given me motivational booster sessions it would have been a lot easier to sustain my motivation at a higher level.

Science of Happiness

Science Daily published an article, “Secret to workplace happiness? Remember what you love about the job, study urges,” which advocates all the concepts that I’ve been talking about. Val Kinjerski co-authored the study. He created two groups; one received a one day “happiness” workshop, while the other was given a one day “happiness” workshop and eight weekly booster sessions.

The most intriguing part of this study was the difference between the control group (only attended the workshop) and the other group that got the workshop plus eight weekly booster sessions after the workshop was over.

The second group saw a much more dramatic improvement in employee happiness and productivity.

I’ll let the article tell you in Val’s words:

“The result for the intervention group was a 23 per cent increase in teamwork, a 10 per cent hike in job satisfaction and a 17 per cent jump in workplace morale. In addition, employer costs related to absenteeism were almost $12,000 less for the five months following the workshop than for the same period in the previous year. The employees also showed an increased interest in and focus on their patients”

Give the Tools

Employers can bring in a motivational speaker for a day, but there won’t be any lasting change unless there is follow-up to sustain the change. The follow up can either to be done by the employer or the speaker can come back with extra sessions.

We all want to work happier, and if our employers would provide us tools to extract more meaning and purpose from our work then I would be the first employee in line.

The positive environment would help employees become happier at work. The productivity would increase while absenteeism would go down. I believe that all it would take is for a person to come in and do a few sessions with your company. You could hire me or have someone else come in every quarter to give booster sessions, reminding the employees work happy and stay focused on the difference they make in customer’s and co-worker’s lives.

What does your company do to boost your motivation? Would you like a weekly, monthly or quarterly motivational booster session? Would it help you work happier?

We suffer now to reap rewards later.

The more you delay gratification the more you will dislike your job.

Not all of us can love our jobs. I don’t love mine, but I do like it. It’s all about figuring out the best way to cultivate your happiness at your job – maximizing instead of hating.

You have to be in control. Not forced control, but the type of perspective that allows you to be okay with whatever life throws at you. You may not be able to increase your pay or reduce your hours, but you have plenty of tools you can use to improve your work happiness.

Appreciation

I love feeling appreciated. A well timed “thank you” or “you are awesome” can make a tough day into a good one. The easiest way to receive a “thank you” is to do something unexpected for your boss or co-workers.

I try to stay aware of people’s stress levels. If they look like they are becoming overwhelmed I try to step in and offer my help. People need help when they are overloaded, but many of us get too caught up in our own problems. If we direct just a little bit of our attention to our co-workers, we will get some appreciation in return.

Results

The people who are the unhappiest at their jobs are least likely to be engaged in their work. Lazy butts is what I like to call them. They would rather complain about what they don’t like than take control of the opportunities before them.

If you don’t feel satisfied with your productivity, try breaking the rules a little and do a job that isn’t assigned to you. I worked for K-mart for a year and a half with the biggest bunch of whiners. However, there was this one lady who didn’t partake in the complaining and instead she used her time to stay busy. She straightened everyone’s checkout lane. When I was sitting on my rump, she was straightening my aisle.

I thanked her profusely. She loved it, I loved it and the managers loved it. I actually started joining in with her (straightening each checkout lane) to see how it would make me feel. I felt productive instead of bored and my co-workers loved it.

You have to find ways to get the results that make you feel good. Experiment with different ideas and when you come across one that works, stick with it until you get bored and then change it up or find something new.

Friendships

One good friend at work can change your whole perspective and emotional well-being. I interned for a leather design company in college. The owner employed an old lady to answer the phones, about six Mexicans who made the leather products in the workshop (none of them spoke English) and myself. I went into work every day trying to cold call companies about our products. It was a disaster. I wasn’t getting any results and I didn’t have a friend to share my problems with. I quit after two months.

I’ve had worse jobs, but at least at those jobs I had friends. We could vent to each other, go out after work and make each other laugh.

If you are shy or slow to make friends, try reaching out a little more. You can bring in a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies or invite someone to grab a drink after work. You have to understand the social culture of your company. It will take some time to know what works, but the more friends you make the more enjoyable your job will become.

Leisure Breaks

There are reasons why most countries have laws that require employee breaks. At some point (typically 4 hours), the longer we work without a break the less productive we become. Everyone’s threshold is different. We need to step away from our work and let our minds think in a different way to give the overused part of our brains a rest.

I’m a big fan of taking one minute breaks. 60 seconds can do wonders for reducing stress and releasing endorphins (the beautiful chemical our brain releases, making us feel happy). The more you practice taking focused breaks, the more productive you will become. You will be able to transition from one task to another with minimal lag time.

One of my favorite breaks is a cup of afternoon tea. The whole process of pulling out a tea bag, putting it in the cup then filling the cup with hot water makes me feel good. It helps me slow down and set a positive mood for the rest of the day.

If you finish a long email or project then take a minute to slow down and just enjoy a calm moment. You can move your thoughts away from stress and toward a positive outlook.

The Active Relax

So many of us just plow through our work and when we look up our backs, brain, and wrists hurt. We become all tense from just trying to get to point B. We stop paying attention to our needs and just hurry to get our work done.

When I feel my jaw tightening or my breath becoming shallow, these are my first signs of stress. Before the stress has a chance to take over, I slow down and do an “Active Relax” with my work. I downshift to a lower gear, moving my thoughts away from being super productive, and I give 50% of my focus toward relaxing and enjoying while still working. The email that I’m working on might take five more minutes to complete, but to me it’s worth it. I would rather stay at work for five more minutes instead of stressing out and rushing to get it done. It’s taking me a long time to cultivate the “Active Relax” while I work, but I would be an emotional mess without it.

Next time you are engrossed in your work, try to find a signal that allows you to see if you are working too hard without giving your needs proper attention. That signal may be a tight shoulder or the inability to stop worrying about a problem. Stay aware of this flicker of a signal and when you notice it, use the moment to slow down and actively relax with your work. Time is how you view it. If you can convince yourself that taking some time to slow down is beneficial to your health then you’ll get into the habit of reducing your stress before it takes over.

Create Fun

Creating a fun atmosphere makes the day much more enjoyable. I’ve worked with the type of people who pick you up, those who bring you down, as well as the non emotional contenders. Each one plays his/her role, but the people who pick you up are more fun to work with.

I had a co-worker who played often and worked hard and I loved being around him. After working on a difficult report he would come out of his office and start chatting up the office, letting out pent up energy. He would stop by my desk and talk a little football. He would make a few jokes with Linda then take a few moments to swap a story with the CEO. He tried to include everyone in his fun. This would last about twenty minutes then he would go back to work. It was amazing to see how he picked up the spirits of the whole office. For over an hour afterward we had a little hop in our steps.

You can create some fun at your job too. Let out a few jokes, ask someone what they are doing this weekend, or give another co-worker a compliment. Watch what happens. They will light up, which of course makes you feel good.

Exercise at Work

Getting your heart pumping will send out those feel good chemicals. Just ten minutes of exercise can have effects for hours. It takes you away from the job and stirs up some internal excitement.

I try to take a walk break every morning and afternoon. I love getting out in the fresh air and giving my back and eyes a break from the chair and computer screen. I make this a focused relaxation. My thoughts often get pulled back toward work, so I try to refocus my energy on enjoying each step and the sights that I see. I’m a big fan of trees (who isn’t?). I love how their branches squirm in all kinds of directions, trying to catch the energy from the sun.

Try to use techniques that allow you to get your heart rate going a little bit, while also allowing you to take a break from your work. Both are much needed stress relievers to keep you motivated throughout your day.

You Have All the Tools

Your ability to enjoy your job is really up to you. It’s all about how you choose to interact with the people, tasks, and your thoughts. If you choose to be unhappy at work then you must take some of the blame. If your boss is a tyrant then there isn’t much you can do except to exercise your freedom and find a new job. You have the ability to change the world. You have to let go of your fears and make it happen. That’s why you made it this far in this article. You’re ready to optimize your working life.

You have the power to create your dream career. The only way this will happen is if you listen to your needs. Once you know what will make you happy you must be creative and tenacious in making it happen. I still get down on myself, but I don’t let it last long. I make new plans and take action.

When you keep moving toward the things that excite you, your happiness will come. I promise.

Drop the things that bore you and only do what is necessary.

That’s it. Letting go of the things that don’t excite you and only doing what is absolutely needed. They are the two greatest productivity tools that you can learn. There are many times we think we have to do something, but in reality we don’t.

The only way you are actually going to accomplish a task is if you are more excited about doing it than any alternative action. If you love to do something, you are going to want to do a lot of it. If it bores you then you are going to avoid it.

Too Simple? Maybe it is, but it works. It works because you are tapping into your most primal instinct – do what feels good.

You will write a lot if you want to do it more than riding a bike, watching TV, or hanging out with friends. I love to do all those things, but I probably write more than I do anything else because I love to get ideas out. It means more to me than catching my favorite TV show.

You are going to work hard if you enjoy doing the job more than alternative options. If you choose to coast, you do this because the desire to be productive isn’t stimulating. The need to create is weak. It could be that the work is tedious or your boss never shows appreciation. Whatever the reason, it’s wrecking your ability to be productive.

I write to find new parts of myself, which gets me energized. I use those writings to reach others and hopefully excite them. I become passionate on two levels

Part 1 – Internal Excitement

I never write about what doesn’t interest me because I know that it won’t interest others. Even if I know it will make a great blog post I would rather put it aside and do something I really want to think and write about. I will run with any thought or idea that has any flicker of hope to start a fire. I’ll write about emotional development, ants walking on a flower, business development, a poem about dancing around my home naked, career advice, and my dog because when that spark is burning within me I use it; otherwise it fades fast.

Part 2 – How this action affects the “Future Me”

I have to think about what I do and how it affects the “future me.” Living in the moment is great, but it doesn’t always help build my reputation as a person who can help people improve their working life. When I’m working, I’m there in that moment, but I also seek to understand how this action fits into the way I want the “future me” to be perceived.

Drinking a few beers during lunch may feel good at the time, but the side effects hinder those feel good receptors in your brain that are waiting to be filled with natural dopamine. In the moment of the alcohol buzz, you feel good, but when you get back to work the sluggishness takes over and all you feel like doing is taking a nap. Every choice has its consequences. When I write, I’m building a portfolio of content that is shaping my future. I may physically feel better going for a walk or practicing a little Yoga, but it doesn’t help refine my future as much as writing, so I make a choice to write more because it still feels good and improves the “future me.”

The Small Catch that Anchors Your Productivity

The particular task that you are doing may bore you, but sometimes you do have to make small sacrifices in light of the “bigger picture.” If you are a writer you may hate editing, but you understand that in order to get that deep buzz of excitement that hits your soul, you have to sacrifice a few hours or days of pain to achieve the results you want. This sweet spot is where most great business people, artists, and creators keep returning to find success. The possibility for more future excitement gets that energy going and it’s tough for them to stop.

The CEOs that get themselves into positions of power do it by digging in and working on something that excites them and has potential. They may start off running around like chickens with their heads cut off for the first few years, but they know they are building a foundation for something more exciting – the ability to make good decisions and affect other people’s lives. If your passion is lacking then the work suffers and failure is the likely result.

I’m not talking about the failure to keep a job. Most of us can coast, do the minimum and keep receiving our paychecks, but that’s not where the fun is. Work becomes a chore and that constitutes a failure on your part. So it’s up to you to match your internal (gut) excitement with the future potential to get the most out of your projects.

For example, when you envision a clean work space, you probably see yourself sitting in your chair with a smile on your face, just grabbing that report or pen because everything is organized. This thought may get you excited and willing to take action, but you won’t sustain that energy if you can’t clearly see how much it will help you.

Productivity will create happiness if you strive to achieve both parts:

Internal Excitement

Potential Future Excitement

Both feel good, but when they are combined, you will produce great results.

We help you explore your passions by collecting stories from “all the top” sites on the web. We’ve grouped these collections — ”aggregations” — into individual Alltop sites based on topics such as environment, photography, science, celebrity gossip, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, and Macintosh. At each Alltop site, we display the latest five stories from thirty or more sites on a single page — we call this “single-page aggregation.”

You can think of an Alltop site as a “dashboard,” “table of contents,” or even a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. To be clear, Alltop sites are starting points — they are not destinations per se. The bottom line is that we are trying to enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed. In this way, our goal is the “cessation of Internet stagnation.”

I have officially become a valued source to the work happy industry. I know that to become a self actualized person I shouldn’t need validation from outside sources, but I can’t help it. The inclusion of my blog feed into their site makes me proud.

So take a look around and see if you can discover any other great sites. My recommendations would be…

Oh yeah! I almost forgot, it was pointed out to me that my Google PageRank is at a 5. The scale goes from 1 being low to 9 being so crazy good that it makes you pee your pants. Being at a 5 in less than 3 months is pretty good. I want to thank everyone who has left a comment. When you join in with the conversation it makes this blog 10x better. Just think, when this site explodes you’ll be able to say you were there from the beginning. Okay maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but that’s what this site is all about – living your work dreams. Thanks, now it’s back to work leaving comments, editing my next blog, and online networking.
